The Complete Candle Care Guide: How to Get the Most Out of Every Burn

The Complete Candle Care Guide: How to Get the Most Out of Every Burn

You've invested in a beautiful, hand-poured candle — now let's make sure you get every hour of burn time and fragrance it was designed to deliver. Proper candle care isn't just about safety (though that matters too). It's about honoring the craft that went into your candle and creating the best possible experience every time you light it.

The First Burn Is Everything

The most important burn is the first one. When you light your candle for the first time, let it burn long enough for the entire top surface to melt into a complete pool of liquid wax. For most of our candles, this takes about 2–3 hours. This prevents "tunneling" — that frustrating ring of unmelted wax around the edges that wastes product and reduces your candle's life.

Trim Your Wick Every Time

Before every single burn, trim your wick to about ¼ inch. A trimmed wick produces a cleaner flame, less soot, and a more even burn. You can use a wick trimmer (our favorite tool), nail clippers, or even scissors. If you notice the flame flickering wildly, producing black smoke, or the wick developing a mushroom-shaped carbon ball at the tip, it's time for a trim.

Burn Time Sweet Spot

We recommend burning your candle for 2–4 hours at a time. Burning for less than 2 hours can cause tunneling, while burning for more than 4 hours can cause the wick to shift, the flame to grow too large, and the glass to overheat. When in doubt, the 4-hour rule is your best friend.

Safety First, Always

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended
  • Keep candles away from drafts, vents, and air currents
  • Place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface
  • Keep away from children and pets
  • Stop burning when ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom

Storage Matters

Store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Sunlight can fade the color and weaken the fragrance over time. Keep the lid on when not in use to protect the wax from dust and preserve the scent throw.

Relighting Tips

If your candle has been sitting for a while, give the top a gentle wipe with a soft cloth to remove any dust. Center the wick before relighting if it has shifted. And remember — a candle that's been well cared for will reward you with beautiful, consistent fragrance from the first burn to the last.
